Perry senior Katelyn Whelchel will look to be the leader for a fairly young Jayette softball program this year.

After a couple of rain outs last night, both the Perry baseball and softball teams hope to open up the regular season tonight.  The baseball team will host Norwalk in a JV/V doubleheader.  The game will be the second of four non conference opponents to open up the season.  Perry lost a game last night with North Polk as the two teams could not find an open date to make it up.  Perry will travel to Roland Story Thursday for a varsity doubleheader and travel to Dallas Center Grimes on Monday.  The defending RRC champions open up conference play Wednesday, June 3rd at Merchants Ball Park in Carroll.   Shawn Kenney will have the play by play tonight on KDLS and on line at raccoonvalleyradio.com.

Will Whiton is anticipated to be the opening night starter for Perry.

Meanwhile, the Perry softball team will open the season tonight at Winterset.  The Jayettes lost the luxury of a non conference tune up last night when their game with North Polk was postponed.  The two teams will try to reschedule.  Perry is coming off an impressive 18 win campaign a year ago and will look to knock off a Winterset program that has qualified for the state tournament three out of the past four years.

“We had a really good off season I thought,” adds Perry Head Coach Tina Kenney.  “We kind of changed things up a little bit due to a lot of the kids having experience and knowing what we expect.  Some of these kids have been around the program a few years so I thought it would be beneficial to start putting more attention to detail on a lot of the little things and to try and get them more mentally focused and prepared.”

Emma Olejniczak is anticipated to be the opening day starter in the circle for Perry.
