ADM softball hung on for a nailbiting 3-2 win over Winterset Monday night in Adel as junior starter Molly Jacobsen left the go-ahead run on base with a little help from her defense.
Things got dicey in the seventh, when freshman Natalie Hanson laced a one-out double to the gap in right-center and moved to third on an error by right field Montana Popp, who struggled to get a clean handle on the ball.
Jacobsen then intentionally walked leadoff hitter Macy Johnson to face Danny Barker, who chopped a ball right back to the mound. Jacobsen (8-1) caught Hanson leaning too far off third, and after a rundown, Hanson was tagged out at third on a bang-bang play. The junior then induced a groundout from Kylie McDonald to nail down ADM’s fourth straight win.
Jacobsen allowed two runs, both earned, with six strikeouts and four walks, stranding seven Winterset runners in all.
ADM (8-1, 5-0 RRC) took a 1-0 lead in the first as Gabbie Glenn lead off the game with a double and scored on a passed ball with two outs. Jacobsen made it 2-0 on her second homer of the year leading off the third, cranking the first pitch of the inning from Huskies starter Regan Thompson (5-3) over the fence in right.
The Tigers tacked on what turned out to be the game-winning run the following inning on Shannon Jones’ RBI single, plating Taylor Boorn, who lead off the inning with a double.
Winterset (8-6, 2-2 RRC) cut ADM’s lead to 1 in the fifth on two-out RBI hits from Johnson and Barker, who now has four RBIs in two games against Jacobsen.
The win avenged a 3-1 loss to Winterset in the championship game of the Huskies’ home tournament on May 30, which doesn’t count in the conference standings. ADM remains alone in first place with a crucial conference matchup coming up Wednesday night in Adel against No. 6 Carlisle, a game that can be heard live on K107.
