One night after narrowly avoiding a third straight loss, the Greene County softball team, ranked third in Class 3A, looked the part on Thursday evening by winning 11-1 in six innings by the 10-run rule vs. Southeast Valley (Gowrie) in non-conference play. The win was the twentieth straight for Ram teams at the City Diamond on East Lincolnway dating back to June 25, 2013. The Jaguars fell to 11-6 as Greene County improved to 14-2 behind errorless defense, the two-hit pitching of Marissa Promes, and an offense that had 15 hits, including seven for extra bases.

The Rams scored six runs in the second and three in the fourth for a 9-0 lead. The only two SEV base runners for the game doubled and singled to lead off the fifth to make it 9-1. Greene County ended the game with two sixth inning runs. Promes walked no one, did not hit a batter, and fanned five while improving to 13-2 on the season.

Offensively, Emily Christensen hit a two-run homer and tripled. Hannah Onken hit a two-run homer and doubled twice. Both girls drove in two runs. Promes doubled, as did eighth grader Jenna Beyers, who two-bagger ended the game. Beyers also singled and drove in a run. She played right field in place of Sydney Koch, who broke a finger on Wednesday night in Colfax. Tressa Rasmussen singled three times to go with a walk, and Bailey Godwin had two RBI on a single. Kayla Mobley had a pair of base hits and lead off batter Carleigh Paup also singled.

Greene County is back in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference tonight in Monroe for a makeup game vs. 2014 conference champion PCM. Coach Tom Kennedy’s team is 9-0 in league play.
