Free Scrap Metal and Appliance Pickup in Perry Sunday

Those in the Perry area who want to get rid of old appliances and scrap metal have the opportunity to do so this weekend.

Deputy Public Works Director Josh Wuebker says the company they’ve worked with in the past is no longer around, but H and W Recycling will continue to provide the service to area residents.

“You can bring your appliances out to the recycle center all free of charge, the only thing they really charge for is televisions and computer monitors and that’s a pretty reasonable rate.”

Items that will be accepted for free include things like dishwashers, video game systems, copiers, riding mowers and exercise equipment.  However, you cannot drop off appliances filled with food, chemicals or paint, carpet or wood furniture, water softeners, propane tanks, plastics, garbage or tires.

The drop off event takes place Saturday from 8am until noon and there will be people on hand to help with unloading.

Getting Rid of Standing Water Can Help Prevent Mosquito Breeding

The recent rain has resulted in standing water all across the Raccoon River Valley.

From farm fields to buckets in the backyard, kids pools to gutters, water is everywhere and it’s providing prime breeding habitats for mosquitoes.

The City of Perry recently sent out a public service announcement reminding residents that crews spray for mosquitoes every Thursday evening, weather permitting, but there are also things we can do to help prevent the breeding of these bugs.

With wet weather like we’ve had the last few days, residents are asked to check for standing water at least once a week and get rid of it.  Mosquitos often lay eggs in the water but it takes several days for the eggs to hatch, and eliminating the pools of water can help control the issue.

If you have water in an area that cannot be drained, the Perry Street Department has a chemical that can treat the water and prevent the mosquitos from maturing.  Those who would like help with this can call the department at 465-2675.

According to the National Weather Service, Guthrie Center received almost 4 inches of rain this week for a total of 5.17 inches so far this month.  That’s one-hundredth of an inch more than the normal monthly rain amount in June.

Perry saw more than 3.6 inches of rain since our last report for a total of more than 4.5 inches.  Jefferson added 2.8 inches to their total this week, for 3.7 inches so far.

More rain is possible tomorrow and Sunday evening.
