Class 3A fourth ranked Greene County had trouble scoring runs in State Center on Saturday and the Rams lost two of three games in the West Marshall tournament. All-State pitcher Marissa Promes was on the pitching rubber for the opening round 2-1 win over Des Moines Christian, but that was the only game she was the starting pitcher. Eighth grader Jenna Beyers delivered a two-run homer for the only Greene County runs, but that was enough to get by the Lions.

The tournament semifinals saw Class 5A Cedar Rapids Prairie cruise by the Rams by the 10-run rule in five innings, 10-0. Hannah Promes, Marissa’s younger sister, pitched and allowed 10 earned runs on 13 hits. The younger Promes was only cleared on June 15 to play softball after knee surgery in late December.

Newton, a Class 4A program, won 7-1 over the Rams in the third place game. Kayla Mobley pitched the first four innings of the five inning contest and took the loss. Six of the seven runs Newton scored were earned. Marissa Promes pitched the last inning.

Greene County fell to 16-4 and the Rams have lost four of eight after starting the season 12-0. Coach Tom Kennedy’s team is on the road in Jewell tonight on KG98 and www.raccoonvalleyradio.com vs. the Hawks. Coverage starts at 7;15 p.m. with the first pitch scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The Rams are 10-0 in conference play and lead the league by three games in the loss column.
