Jefferson Municipal PoolUnseasonably cooler summer temperatures have caused some problems at the Jefferson Municipal Pool.

Parks and Recreation Director Vicky Lautner says they’ve had to cancel some swim lessons and adult lap swim times in the morning because it has been too cold.  According to the National Weather Service, Jefferson saw a record low temperature for July 8th of 51 degrees.  In order for the pool to be open, it must be at least 65 degrees and sunny or 68 degrees and cloudy.  Another pool regulation is if morning swim lessons are cancelled, then the pool will not open until 1pm.

However, Lautner points out that there are times when it’s misty and around 70 degrees in the afternoon, that they close the pool early because no one is using it.

Other weather-related pool rules state is if  lightning is seen or thunder is heard, then the pool will close immediately for 20 minutes after each lightning or thunder occurrence.  If the pool closes before 5:30pm due to inclement weather and it clears up, then the pool will reopen at 6pm.  But, if the pool closes due to inclement weather after 5:30pm, it will remain closed for the rest of the day.  Normal open pool hours are 1 to 8pm.

Lautner is hoping for warmer temperatures for the rest of summer so that more people can enjoy the pool.
