The Heart of Iowa Activities Conference hasn’t been known as a softball power in recent years, but Tom Kennedy, head coach of the Greene County Rams, has said all season he thought the league was better than it’s been in a while, and the regional final pairings support the claim. Four of the league’s 10 teams will be playing in regional finals tonight with State Tournament berths on the line.
Class 3A number four Greene County while the HOIAC title by four games and the Rams will face Hawkeye 10 Conference runner-up Atlantic in Stuart at 7 tonight on KG98.
PCM, Saydel (Des Moines), and CMB (Maxwell) from the HOIAC are also in regional finials tonight. PCM is unranked and plays Class 3A number 1 rated Solon in Grinnell, with 3A number 14 Saydel taking on 2014 State Champion Clarke (Osceola) in Knoxville. In 2A, CMB meets Iowa City Regina in Washington. Saydel pulled the biggest upset among HOIAC teams on Friday in the regional semifinals when they downed number three East Marshall by a 1-0 score in LeGrand.
