greene county medical center logoThe Board of Trustees for Greene County Medical Center met yesterday in regular session.

Chief Financial Officer Mark VanderLinden reported highs and lows in patient volumes for June.  Laboratory and respitory each had their lowest number of patients for the 2015 fiscal year.  Acute and skilled care each had their second lowest amount of patients.  Outpatient speech therapy had its second highest number of patients, while surgery experienced its third highest number of patients.  Some of the reasons why some departments saw a dip in patients for June was because of the number of transfers to Des Moines due to accidents and not having the appropriate services to treat those patients.

The medical center is operating at a loss of $444,259 last month.  VanderLinden pointed out that revenues were at $1,291,210, which was less than the budgeted amount of $1,677,384.  Expenses were $1,931,791 for June, which was slightly less than $1,983,570 that was budgeted.  Non-operating revenue from county taxes and investment incomes totaled $196,322.

The medical center’s operating figures for the 2015 fiscal year were at a loss of $1,848,352.  The hospital’s operating revenue was $20,118,538 compared to $23,683,600 for operating expenses.  The non-operating revenue was $1,716,710 for the year.  Revenues were down from the 2014 fiscal year by $561,948 and expenses were also lower than in 2014 by $375,302.

The hospital’s charity care for the 2015 fiscal year was $138,009 which was almost $100,000 drop from 2014 of $237,851.  Bad debt also saw a decrease in 2015 of $456,127, down from 2014’s $536,414.

Community Relations Director Carla Offenburger gave a presentation on digital marketing for the medical center.  She said the medical center hired Blue Compass and has been working with them for about a year on improving their digital marketing campaign.  The medical center uses statistics from their Facebook and Pinterest pages, along with paying for ads that direct people to their website.  She pointed out that they pay $442  per month with Blue Compass for online advertising.  Of the top ten ways that the medical center receives results from online sources, Raccoon Valley Radio is number eight.

Finally, the Board approved changing a policy for mid-level providers and peer reviews and add it to the hospital’s bylaws.  The Board also approved a purchase of a Stryker Endoscopy Tower.
