The Coon Rapids-Bayard High School baseball team has reached the substate tournament for the 4th time in 5 seasons. It is the sweet 16 of Class 1A baseball and a win tonight sends them to the State tournament at Des Moines’ Principal Park. The Crusaders will meet Council Bluff St. Albert on a neutral field at Harlan. Looking at rankings, Coon Rapids-Bayard is the favorite to win. According to the Iowa Baseball Coaches Association, they are the 6th best team in Class 1A. Council Bluff St. Albert isn’t ranked in the top 15. A check of team statistics indicates that St. Albert is a better all around hitting team. Coon Rapids-Bayard’s edge comes with their superior pitching staff, better patience at the plate and better speed on the base paths. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Harlan.
