Greene County was a 5-0 Class 3A State Softball Tournament winner over number nine Crestwood (Cresco) during Tuesday’s quarterfinals. The fourth ranked Rams improved to 31-6 and have today off to prepare for the semifinals at 1 p.m. tomorrow (Thursday) vs. number two Benton Community (Van Horne). Benton defeated Mount Vernon 5-2 in the quarterfinals.
Ram pitcher Marissa Promes was dominant vs. the Cadets, a team that entered the contest with a .342 team batting average. All Crestwood could muster was two singles, one of those a bunt, and they had no other base runners. Promes walked no one, and fanned six, while improving to 30-3 on the season.
Greene County scored all five runs in the bottom of the third inning. Coach Tom Kennedy’s team had six hits in the frame. Sydney Koch led off with a single. Carleigh Paup added a one out base hit, and Kayla Mobley had in infield single over second base to load ’em up for Emily Christensen, who delivered a two-run single on a no ball, two strike pitch. Tressa Rasmussen added a two-run double with two outs and Emma Saddoris followed with a base hit to drive in the fifth run.
The Rams had five runs on 10 hits with all nine Rams hitting safely off losing pitcher Lauren Reicks, a sophomore left hander. Paup was the only player with two hits and both were singles. Hannah Onken had a double for the Rams and the other singles were by Promes and Bailey Godwin.
