Thankfully no one has been severely injured in a Perry area fire in recent history but that doesn’t mean it couldn’t happen.
Perry Volunteer Fire Department Chief Chris Hinds says if there is a fire, you don’t have much time.
“There’s quite a misconception about how much time you have to get out of your house if you have a fire. The majority of people think that they’ll have 10 minutes or more that they can gather this up, and that up. If they’ve got say a fire in the kitchen or whatever (people think that) they can run to the bed room and get this and get that, and that’s not necessarily the case.”
“Fire spreads very quickly. The gases and things that come off of the material that’s burning today, it’s unlike fire that we had 20 or 30 years ago where it was more wood and things like that. Sofas, carpets, couches, things like that, the materials that they’re made out of put off very deadly gasses. It’s important to get out of there as quickly as possible because once this starts to burn, that’s something that could stop you from getting out because you could inhale it and collapse right there.”
Chief Hinds will share some more fire dangers and tips with us on today’s Let’s Talk Dallas County program during the 9am, noon and 5pm hours on AM 1310 KDLS and the new 99.7 FM.
