The City of Jefferson is once again providing a free hazardous waste drop off event this Saturday.
It will be from 9 to 11am at the Greene County Fairgrounds. Acceptable items include aerosol cleaners and paints, ammonia-based cleaners, antifreeze, rechargeable batteries, fertilizers, fluorescent light bulbs, gasoline and kerosene, oil, lead-based paints, stains, varnishes, metal polishes, rust removers, thermometers and thermostats that contain mercury, pesticides, petroleum adhesives and used oil filters. Sharps and needles will be accepted, but only in containers with the lids taped shut.
Those items that won’t be accepted include ammunition, asbestos, electronics, explosives, fire extinguishers, latex paint, medications, propane tanks, cylinders and radioactive materials.
City Administrator Mike Palmer explains the process that people will go through to drop off their materials.
“You’ll be checked in. We like to keep track of how many cars we have coming in and roughly what they’re bringing. You’ll be asked to pull forward and there’ll be three or four guys in white hazmat suits and they’ll unload your car, and it’s all sorted out, and you can just be on your way. You don’t even have to get out of your car, we’ll take care of everything.”
The event is free for Jefferson residents only. Anyone with questions about the types of materials they may have, can call 1-888-603-CREW.
