Adair County Fair Queen Shelby Soper was named Miss Personality at the Iowa State Fair. As a prize for the Personality Plus Award, Soper receives a $500 scholarship and a $200 gift card to West Des Moines’ Jordan Creek Town Center mall. Soper, of Adair, will begin her senior year at Adair-Casey High School next week and has been involved in 4-H for nine years.

The Adair County Auditor’s office will be using new election software, beginning with September’s school board election. Auditor Mindy Schaefer says the Precinct Atlas software contains a list of all the registered voters in an election. Schaefer says the software will allow for easy registration of new voters and adds efficiency and accuracy to the job of election workers.

The Chairperson of the Guthrie County Democratic Party has been named as an “Iowa Woman for Hillary Clinton”, which aims to garner grassroots support for the former First Lady in each of Iowa’s 99 counties. Chair Kathy Miller says she supports the presidential candidate, because of her unequivocal promotion of human rights and dignity. Former Director of the Iowa Department of Public Health and current Panora resident, Mary Mincer-Hansen, has also been recognized for her support by the Clinton campaign.

Absentee ballots are now available for next month’s West Central Valley school board election. Absentee ballots may be cast at the Dallas County Auditor’s office in Adel, Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., until Friday, September 4th. Absentee ballots returned through the mail must be postmarked by September 5th. For more information about absentee ballots, call the Dallas County Auditor’s office at 515-993-6914.

The West Central Valley School Board of Directors met Wednesday night. The Board approved the hiring of Maggie Weber to teach second grade at Stuart Elementary. Weber is taking over the position from her own second grade teacher, Shonn McDonald. The Board reported that district school buses were safety certified and ready to go mechanically for the school year which begins Monday.

Additionally, the Board approved the resignations of Stuart Elementary teacher Shonn McDonald, part-time nurse Jeri Moore and assistant softball coach Alicia Hanner. Numerous new contracts for part-time coaching positions were approved for the new school year.

The Board approved 9 open enrollment requests. Five out to Adel-Desoto-Minburn, one out to Urbandale, one out to Nodaway Valley and two in to West Central Valley.

The Board ended their meeting watching the first part of an instructional video from the Iowa and Missouri Associations of School Boards. They will finish watching part two of the video at next month’s meeting.
