The girls and boys cross-country teams from Greene County High School open their seasons today in Ames for the Gilbert Invitational on the Iowa State University course. Starting time is 4:45 p.m. for the JV/varsity coed event. Greene County’s coach is Kelly Simpson and he’ll have approximately 15 runners take part in the event.
Graduation last Spring took a toll on the numbers out, but junior Olivia Hansen returns for the girls. She was the number one runner on the 2014 team that was ranked ninth in Class 3A. This is the first year Hansen and the other girls will be running five kilometers (3.1 miles), which is the same distance as the boys.
Meet officials are hoping to have the races completed before anticipated rainfall arrives in the evening hours.
