ADM needed just two touchdowns to beat Perry in the season opener on Friday, using an opportunistic defense to beat the Blue Jays, 14-13, at Dewey Field.
The Tigers (1-0) moved the ball well in the first half, missing on several scoring chances before breaking through with 10:35 to go in the second quarter on a seven-yard touchdown pass from Frank Weiland to Sam McCartney. A bad snap resulted in a missed extra point by Ethan Kaney, so ADM had to settle for a 6-0 lead.
Weiland struck again with 8:49 to go in the third quarter on a five-yard slant pattern to Ian LaFollete, and then found McCartney on that same pattern for a two-point conversion that put the Tigers up, 14-0.
After that, the defense stood tall, allowing just seven points on a third-quarter Perry touchdown drive. Perry’s final score came on a 37-yard scoop-and-score by Blue Jays linebacker Adan Medina with less than a half-minute to go in the third quarter. The Blue Jays had a bad snap on the ensuing extra-point attempt, resulting in a botched two-point try that kept ADM in the lead, 14-13.
The fourth quarter then saw four combined turnovers between the two teams, three forced by ADM. The Tigers recovered a fumble and got two interceptions from Tigers safety Daniel Finnegan, his second coming with 1:01 to play, virtually sealing the win.
ADM’s defense collectively earned the game ball, and in particular the front seven, which sacked Perry senior quarterback Ryan Rathje eight times and held the Blue Jays to -30 yards rushing.
The Tigers continues non-district play at 7:30 p.m. Friday night in the home opener vs. Ballard. As always, our pregame coverage on K107 and raccoonvalleyradio.com kicks off at 7 p.m.
