Greene County is 1-0 on the high school football season after Saturday night’s 42-28 non-district victory over Class 1A preseason ninth rated South Central Calhoun in Lake City. After nearly two hours and 45 minutes of a tense and exciting season opening high school football game, the coach could finally take a breath and smile when he put on the Raccoon Valley Radio headsets for his post game interview on KG98. “I’m really proud of all of them for the way they played and the character they showed. When we fell behind 28-14 early in the fourth quarter, no one on the sidelines, players, managers, or coaches, were down. The kids showed great character in coming back. This was a great high school football game, and sure, you want to win, but both teams had talent and gave great effort. I was glad to be a part of it.”
The teams combined for 70 points and 632 yards of offense (317 SCC, 315 Rams). The Rams led 7-6 after one quarter and 14-12 at the half. SCC was ahead 20-14 at the end of the third quarter and went up 28-14 with 10:48 left in the fourth. The Rams responded with 28 points from 10:03 remaining to 3:09 left in the game, and they ended the contest by taking a knee deep in the Titans end of the field, completely dominating the last 10 minutes on both sides of the ball and special teams.
Next up for the Rams is the home opener vs. Kuemper Catholic (Carroll) at Linduska Field in Jefferson on Sept. 4. The Knights lost to Carroll High on Friday night by a 24-7 score. Coverage on KG98 begins at 6:30 p.m. with kickoff at 7:30 p.m. The game will also be streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
