It was an active night of storms in our listening area as the Raccoon Valley Radio Severe Weather Action Team provided live, uninterrupted coverage three times on Sunday.
Only heavy rainfall and at times strong winds were the only major factors associated with each of the three severe thunderstorm warnings. Two separate thunderstorm warnings were issued by the National Weather Service for the northern portion of Greene County. The first warning was from 7:11pm and ended at 7:45pm for northwestern Greene County. The second warning was from 7:54pm and ended shortly before 8:30pm for the northeastern portion of Greene County.
A severe thunderstorm warning was then issued by the National Weather Service for northern portions of Guthrie and Dallas counties from 9:24pm until 9:54pm.
Greene County Deputy Dave Kersey reported heavy rainfall and no damage in the affected areas of the County. Guthrie County Emergency Management Coordinator Bob Kempf reported heavy rain and strong winds in the northwestern part of the County, around the Jamaica area. The Guthrie County Fair was largely unaffected by the storm. He told Raccoon Valley Radio that one of the areas that saw the most rain was Coon Rapids, which had received about three inches by around 9pm.
The weather incident also enacted a flash flood warning for all three of our counties until 3:30am Monday morning.
Five members of the Raccoon Valley Radio’s Severe Weather Action Team provided live, uninterrupted coverage during the two severe weather incidents. We also worked with Weathereye meteorologists, providing all weather related updates to our listeners on-air, online and our mobile streaming apps.
Update from our original post at 8:52pm.
