Next week is National Fire Prevention Week and the Jefferson Fire Department is continuing to provide a service to youngsters to teach them about fire safety.
Fire Chief Randy Love says the department is usually at the elementary school during National Fire Prevention Week teaching kids how to prevent fires, but since Homecoming is next week, they are doing their presentations today. Part of the program is spent in the classroom talking with students about an emergency escape plan from their home and an alternative place for family members to meet, along with reminding their parents to check smoke detectors, not going back into their house for pets, Stop Drop and Roll and calling 911 in case of a fire.
The other part of the program is outside, where kids get to see fire trucks, how the hoses work and touch some of the equipment.
Each presentation is about 20-30 minutes and will last the entire school day.
