Thursday night’s non-conference volleyball match between county rivals ADM and Dallas Center-Grimes in Adel will be about much more than volleyball. The two teams are again partnering to host the “Dig Pink” fundraiser, a night devoted to supporting the fight against breast cancer.
To raise funds, the teams are providing $5 special concession meals, $1 desert bars and a silent auction. All proceeds with benefit Katie’s Crusaders, a non-profit organization that provides support to local families battling breast cancer.
Tigers head coach Mary Beth Scott said she appreciates the way the two schools work together to make the fundraiser possible.
“I think it’s awesome that we have been able to come together and do this as a group, as a team effort,” she said. “I believe a lot of the Dig Pink movement is that everyone fights together, and so for our two schools to do this every year, really shows that we do care about our communities. We are fighting for, besides winning a volleyball game — it’s not about the game, it’s about living life and being there for each other.”
Scott also noted that several members of ADM’s volleyball team have been directly affected by breast cancer or some other form of cancer with their families. Girls on both teams will be playing either “in honor of” or “in memory of” a person they are connected to who has battled or is currently battling cancer.
Fans can begin showing up at 5:30 p.m. for the freshmen and junior varsity games. The varsity match is scheduled for 7.
As for the matchup itself, ADM (14-14) had its four-game winning streak snapped in a loss to Bondurant-Farrar on Tuesday. Dallas Center-Grimes (18-10) has won three straight.
