When people ask who the best extra point kicker in the history of Jefferson-based football is, the answer is likely to be Nick Schroeder. The Greene County High School junior has made his last 60 extra point kicks dating back to October 25, 2013. That was his freshman season and he had his first try blocked vs. OABCIG (Ida Grove). In the two years since then it’s been nothing but makes for Schroeder, who also is an outstanding receiver.

Schroeder and his teammates were honored last night at the annual Greene County football potluck supper and awards night in the middle school gym. The streak includes his last five attempts in 2013, 22 for 22 in 2014, and 33 for 33 in the season just completed.

Grinnell and Greene County are the only high school football programs in Iowa to make every extra point kick over the last two seasons, according to information provided by the schools and listed on QuikStats Iowa. The Tigers went 20 for 20 both last season and this season for 40 straight.

High school football in Jefferson began in 1898, and while accurate statistics don’t date back that far, it’s unlikely anyone in the early days of the sport did what Schroeder has accomplished. The kicker and his teammates will take the streak of 60 straight extra points into his senior season next Fall.
