jefferson welcomeJefferson residents are reminded of the City’s open burning policy.

According to City Code, any yard waste such as grass, leaves, garden waste, brush and tree limbs under one foot in diameter can be burned within city limits, year round, from 7am-9pm.  Any fires that are used for recreation, such as for cooking, ceremonies or for outdoor heat are permitted on private property.  Residential waste is allowed to be burned at four-family unit homes or less.  Anything outside of those restrictions are prohibited.

Jefferson Fire Chief Randy Love gives some safety reminders if residents want to burn their yard waste.

“It’s always recommended to have the water source nearby and actually, by the (City) Code, the way it states, they are suppose to stay there and be with that fire the whole time it is burning, they are not suppose to leave that fire.  Which is always a good idea because who knows when the wind is going to switch and start taking toward something that you don’t want to burn up.”

The City offers a free yard waste dump site by Daubendiek Park.  Residents can take their yard waste, dirt and concrete, free of charge, to the dump site all year round.
