Tuesday night will be a busy one for the Greene County High School Winter sports teams. Not one, not two, but all three Rams’ squads will be in action. Coach Mark Sawhill’s wrestlers, Dean Lyons’ girls’ basketball team, and Jeramie Hinote’s boys’ basketball teams all will be busy.
The wrestlers travel to Van Meter for season opening action vs. the combined Van Meter/Earlham team, as well as the Ogden Bulldogs. Just 10 wrestlers are out for the sport, perhaps the smallest number since the sport began in Jefferson 50 years ago. Returning State meet qualifiers in senior Tommy Bradshaw and junior Hunter Ruth are expected to lead the team.
The basketball teams host Perry tomorrow night in the middle school gym in Jefferson. The Rams are 0-1 in girls’ hoops after losing on Nov. 24 at home to PCM (Monroe), 38-24. The boys will be opening the 2015-16 vs. Perry. Coach Hinote returns an experienced team led by junior Trey Tucker, one of Class 3A’s top scorers a season ago when he averaged 22.6 points per contest. Tucker has 909 points in his first two seasons of high school basketball and has averaged more than 21 points a game during that time.
Tomorrow night’s basketball can be heard on KG98, KDLS 1310 AM, the new 99.7 FM, and www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
