Anytime it snows more than half an inch in Perry, no parking is allowed on the streets, alleyways or city owned parking lots until the snow stops and the area is plowed from curb to curb.
While this may be an inconvenience to some, Deputy Public Works Director Josh Wuebker says it’s the only way they can effectively clear the roads in a timely manner.
“To get it completely cleared out we have to go up one time to open up a center, turn around and open up the other side of the center, then turn around and do curbs so we’re up a road four times. If there’s a car there, we have to go around that car while we’re doing these four passes, then when that car moved we still have to go past there another two times. So that’s six times with those cars there, could be possibly eight if there’s cars on the other side. So it almost doubles the time on some. So it saves us a tremendous amount of time.”
Plus, Wuebker says by not having your car on the street you don’t have to worry about someone hitting it.
Public Works Director Jack Butler says his department even tries to get the roads cleared early, typically starting around 2am.
“Everybody’s at home, they’re in bed, the cars are moved and we can get through that route so much faster. You know, we’re out of your way, you’re out of our way. Yes, I know the blades bang down the street when they go by your house but that’s minor compared to us out there fighting traffic.”
Wuebker and Butler will join us on today’s Let’s Talk Dallas County during the 9am, noon and 5pm hours.
