The Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office and Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) continue to remind residents that harvesting any part of a roadkill deer is illegal, unless you have a salvage tag.
DNR Conservation Officer Jeremy King says you can get a salvage tag for free by calling him or just about any area law enforcement agency. “What a salvage tag basically is, is a paper tag that we fill out, free of cost. What that tag means is that you are legally allowed to possess that deer. However, where people get confused is that we don’t give salvage tags for antlers, we give salvage tags for deer. If we give you a salvage tag, you have to take the entire deer.”
King will tell us more about salvage tags and remind us about Iowa’s other poaching laws today on Let’s Talk Guthrie County. It airs during the 9 a.m., noon and 5 p.m. hours on K107.9 and www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
