It’s been a rough December for the Greene County High School wrestling program, more so in terms of numbers than performance. Coach Mark Sawhill’s Rams have held their own in the actual matches wrestled, but so few wrestlers are on the team that forfeits make winning nearly impossible.
Greene County stands at 0-11 in dual meets at the Winter Break. A large reason for that is the fact the Rams have had no more than six of the 14 weight classes filled an any time this season. During the two invitational tournaments the Rams have been in, they’ve not finished last. They were ahead of two teams at Dallas Center-Grimes on Dec. 5, and finished ahead of one at the eight-team Tiger-Knight Invitational in Carroll.
Coach Sawhill did have some boys join the team late, and there has been some illness and injury, so if all the pieces come together, the coach told Raccoon Valley Radio he could have as many as nine wrestlers in the lineup once the break is over. Nine isn’t 14, but it’s better than the four, five, or six the team has had in the line up so far. The Rams make their 2016 debut in Jewell on Thursday, Jan. 7 vs. South Hamilton and PCM (Monroe).
