Greene County, like much of the state, experienced two different kinds of winter weather in the past week.
Sheriff Steve Haupert says last Wednesday and Thursday, the roads were mostly slushy in the mid-afternoon, before they became snow covered. He points out on Wednesday alone, there were over ten single vehicle accidents that happened due to the slushy roadways in the county.
“Once you got out of the track and the traveled portion of the roadway, we had many vehicles sliding into the ditch and just losing control, just going straight down pavement or gravel roads.”
That wasn’t the case for Monday’s snow event where the roads weren’t covered by slush or ice.
“The blowing and drifting (of snow) will be prevalent. But it always seems like as the snow is blowing across the roadway, if visibility is pretty good, we have less accidents than we do with those slushy kind of snow-burst type incidents.”
Haupert urges everyone to drive to the conditions of the roads and stay safe for the rest of the winter season.
