Registrations for the 2016 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program are now being accepted.
Greene and Guthrie County Iowa State University Extension offices are partnering together to put on the free program. Greene County Extension Families Coordinator Sue Richardson says trained volunteers will prepare basic tax return forms for individuals or families whose gross income level is below $57,000. You must call to schedule an appointment. If you qualify, a packet of information will be sent, along with a list of materials to bring on the day of your appointment.
Richardson points out that VITA benefits all parties involved.
“Basically it’s a win-win for both those people that had their taxes done and for the county. The participants save on the cost of preparation and then, in turn, they can spend their money locally at local businesses.”
Appointment dates at the Greene County office are Tuesday evenings from 4 to 7pm January 26th through March 15th and Saturdays from 8am to 4pm on February 13th and 27th. Call or stop by the Extension office in Jefferson to schedule an appointment.
