If you had to use one word to describe the ADM Tiger wrestling team this past week, the term resilience would probably fit the Tigers perfectly. After suffering one of their worst dual team losses of the season against West Des Moines Valley (65-10) last Thursday followed by barely missing out on a win against Dowling Catholic (39-34), the Tiger wrestling team went right back to the mats on Saturday, taking second in the ADM Tiger Invitational.
The Tigers earned the second spot for the invitational, as Atlantic was the only team to edge out ADM for the top spot. Atlantic earned first place with 189 team points followed by the Tigers with 172.5, Ames placed third with 167.5 points, Dallas Center-Grimes notched 4th place with 159 points, Waukee at 5th with 126.5, PCM placed 6th with 114 points, Roland-Story earned 7th with 99 points, while Red Oak, Clarke, and Nevada rounded out the bottom three with 77, 49, and 45 points respectively.
Zach Johnston (29-2) was one of two first place finishers for the Tigers. Johnston came into Saturdays invitational having only lost two matches on the season so far and it would stay that way as Johnston went undefeated on the day proving why he is the second ranked wrestler in class 2A at 160 lbs as noted by the Predicament. Johnston defeated Atlantic’s Mitchell Williamson by technical fall in 5:17 as it seemed to get easier from then on as Johnston defeated Maggard (PCM) by fall in 3:08 and taking down Waukee’s Grant Brown by 9-3 decision.
Nathan Heath, ranked 4th in class 2A by the Predicament at 285 lbs, was the second Tiger to earn first place, winning by way of a 15-3 major decision as he still maintains just one loss on the season. Hunter Gibson (220 lbs) just missed out on becoming the third Tiger to win first place as he fell to Ame’s Harrison Townsend by 5-2 decision.
The Tigers be on the road for their next match up as they head to Bondurant to take on Carlisle and Bondurant-Farrar in a triangular on Thursday with matches beginning at 5:30.
