Greene County and Saydel split two Heart of Iowa Activities Conference high school basketball games on KG98 and www.raccoonvalleyradio.com Friday night on the northeast side of Des Moines. The Eagles were 49-25 girls’ winners while the Rams won the boys’ game by a 60-46 final.

Senior Cassie Chubb scored 13 points for a Saydel team that never trailed. The Eagles were up 24-12 at the half and 39-18 after three quarters of play. The biggest lead was 25 points late in the contest. Greene County had six points from sophomore Laurin Lyons and five by senior Nicole Rohner. The Rams were 10 of 44 from the field and four of eight from the foul line while Saydel went 14 of 42 from the floor and 18 of 24 from the charity stripe. The Eagles were five of 12 on three-point shots. Greene County fell to 3-16 overall and 3-12 in the HOIAC. Saydel improved to 7-13 and 4-10

The Greene County boys led from start to finish, jumping out to a quick 13-2 lead. It took the Eagles 6:42 of playing time to get their first field goal and the Rams led 16-7 after the first quarter. Saydel cut a 20-7 deficit to 26-17 at the half, then got to within 32-26 early in the third quarter before freshman Trey Hinote came off the bench for the Rams and sank four straight three-point baskets to quickly build the lead again, and the Rams were never again seriously challenged. Coach Jeramie Hinote’s team led 50-30 at the end of the third period. Junior Trey Tucker led the Rams in scoring with 16 points and Hinote added 14. The Rams made nine of 20 three-point attempts, with seven of those in the second half. The Rams were 21 of 44 overall from the field and nine of 13 from the free throw line. The Eagles made 13 of 14 foul shots, but were only 14 of 45 from the floor. Greene County is now 8-10 overall and 7-7 in the Heart of Iowa following a fifth straight road win. The Eagles are 0-14 in the conference and 1-17 overall.

Greene County plays a girl/boy doubleheader Monday, Feb. 8 in Panora vs. Panorama on KG98 and www.raccoonvalleyradio.com. Coverage starts at 5:45 p.m. with the girls playing at 6 and the boys to follow.

Both Rolling Valley Activities Conference games went to the closing seconds in Churdan Friday night between the visiting Ar-We- Va (Westside) Rockets and the home Paton-Churdan Rockets. AWV won the girls’ game 70-67 to improve to 13-7 overall and 12-7 in the conference, while P-C fell to 11-8 on the season and 10-8 in the league. The P-C boys handed the top 10 rated AWV team their first conference loss by a 64-62 final. Coach Chris Stimson’s team is now 14-4 in the Rolling Valley and 14-5 overall. AWV fell to 18-1 in the conference and 18-2 overall.
