This is the last big weekend of Winter sports for athletes at Greene County High School. Athletes will be competing in four different sports between tonight and tomorrow night and it gets underway with boys’ basketball in the middle school gym in Jefferson this evening. Coach Jeramie Hinote’s Rams play their final home game of the season, which is also the regular season finale, with the PCM Mustangs visiting. The Rams were just 3-8 on the season when they surprised the Mustangs in Monroe by a 76-54 final a month ago. PCM enters tonight’s game with a 13-7 mark while the Rams are 9-10 overall. It’s boys’ only action tonight and we’ll start coverage of the varsity contest around 7:25 p.m. on KG98 and www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
The State Swim Meet in Marshalltown begins tomorrow at noon and Greene County High School students Nick Schroeder and Ethan Woodruff will be swimming for Boone through an athletic sharing agreement. Scroeder is in the fast heat of both the 50 yard freestyle and 100 yard freestyle. Schroeder and Woodruff make up half of Boone’s 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relays that also qualified.
Three Rams will be wrestling at noon Saturday in Webster City at a Class 2A district tournament. Kane Borgeson (113), Tommy Bradshaw (152), and Isaiah Yoder (160) will take to the mats in an effort to qualify for the Feb. 18-20 State tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. The first and second place finishers in each weight class will advance to State.
At 7 p.m. Saturday the Greene County girls open Class 3A Region 8 basketball tournament play with a tall task in front of them. Coach Dean Lyons’ Rams are 3-17 on the season and they take on undefeated and number one rated Pocahontas Area (21-0) in Pocahontas on KG98 and www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
