The Class 3A Iowa Girls’ High School State Championship basketball game at 4 p.m. tomorrow inside Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines has Nevada meeting Pocahontas Area/Laurens-Marathon. Ordinarily, that wouldn’t have much to do with the Raccoon Valley Radio area, but there is a tie in. The Greene County Rams played both teams this season, losing twice to Nevada and once to the Indians by a combined score of 227-41.

PAC-L-M is the Twin Lake Conference champion and is number one rated. They use a high powered offense that has scored 90 or more points seven times including topping the century mark twice, which was the case in Thursday night’s 102-91 semifinal victory over Cherokee. The winning team trailed 85-80 with 3:30 to play in the game and went on a 22-6 run to end it.

Nevada relies more on defense. The Cubs, ranked third, are the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference champions. They held opponents to 20 points or less 10 times this season. Nevada won its semifinal Thursday night by a 47-41 score over second ranked Center Point-Urbana. CP-U is the school the Greene County softball team defeated last July for third place in the 3A State Softball Tournament.

Tomorrow’s 3A title game is a rematch of the 2015 championship, won by Nevada 58-54. The two also met this season in Pocahontas with the home team Indians staging a late comeback for a 55-52 victory. Players and coaches from Greene County will be watching tomorrow’s rubber match with interest.
