Today is the final day of the 2016 Iowa Girls High School State Basketball Tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Nevada and Pocahontas Area/Laurens-Marathon meet for the Class 3A title at 4 p.m. It’s the second straight season these two have played for the championship with Nevada winning 58-54 in 2015.

Greene County played both the Cubs and Indians this season, losing twice to Heart of Iowa Activities Conference champion Nevada, and once to Twin Lakes champion PAC/L-M. The combined score for the three games was 227-41.

The boys’ State Tourney begins Monday at Wells Fargo Arena. Perry is the lone area qualifying team. The Blue Jays are in the Class 3A field.

Greene County boys’ head coach Jeramie Hinote told Raccoon Valley Radio that most of the best teams in the state have multiple players involved with basketball half of the year or more through AAU or other programs. “When you look at the best teams in the state and you go down their roster, their top four, five, six kids are probably playing AAU somewhere. If you don’t, you’re going to get behind in this world we’re in today because the high school AAU season begins March 26 and goes all the way to the end of July. If you’re not playing you’re going to get behind and I think our guys have seen that and recognized it, and I give them credit for wanting to go ahead and try and get involved in it.” He added he could see as many as six Rams play AAU ball.
