The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) is reviewing two aspects of the new Guthrie County State Bank building project in Guthrie Center, which sits at the junction of two state highways, 25 and 44.
Mayor and Guthrie County State Bank Vice President of Operations Denny Kunkle says DOT officials have been communicating with representatives of the company in charge of the project, Turnkey Associates, of Waterloo, about a possible noncompliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. “Where they’re putting the handicapped accessibility in front of the bank, the DOT says there’s not enough clearance between that and a light pole. We thought this was resolved weeks ago and have found out the DOT did not approve the design of the entrance. Right now they’re bickering about technicalities, and the way I see it, they are talking about only two inches of difference.”
The issue of water flowing from the bank’s roof onto public property is also being looked at by the DOT. “You have to remember, the reason the DOT is involved is it’s their highway and their right of way and they have said, ‘We’re not going to allow you to dump that kind of water on the street.'”
Kunkle says both parties are trying to resolve the issues as quickly and effectively as possible.
