The Character Counts Coach of the Year Award collected by Perry head coach Ned Menke wasn’t the only honor given to the Perry basketball program at the 2016 State Basketball Tournament. Perry senior guard and four sport athlete Alex Long was awarded the Iowa Banker’s Association Student Athlete Achievement Award prior to the class 3A State Championship game this past Saturday. Every head coach that competes at the state tournament nominates a member of their team based on academics, community involvement, leadership opportunites, and participation in extracurricular activities, and Long was the lone winner. Menke accepted the award from Raccoon Valley Bank President and CEO Terry Nielsen on behalf of Alex, who was unable to be present. Alex received a plaque and $1,000 scholarship to use at the future school of his choice.
