Perry High SchoolStudents at Perry High School had the chance to learn more about a wide variety of jobs at the bi-annual career day Tuesday.

Iowa’s Jobs for America’s Graduates teacher and career day coordinator Tina Kenney says a lot of people come together to make the event worthwhile for the students.

“We had approximately 100 volunteers come into our school today to help out, either by doing a breakout session or holding an exhibit in the gym.  This year we had a wider range of presenters.  We had some people that are in the culinary industry, we had some business people, firefighters, a lot of health careers, just a wide variety of everything.  We try to get a big choice for the students to choose from when we’re creating our list of presenters so there’s something that everyone can fit into.”

Kenney says the planning process for the event takes around two months and each student is asked to fill out a survey to gauge that they’re interested in.

“Part of my dream for my students is to have them experience different aspects of work life.  You know, that it doesn’t have to always be a nine to five job, that there’s a lot of different opportunities out there that they don’t even know about.  You know, not everyone is going to be a doctor or lawyer or teacher or nurse or the typical things.  There’s a lot of interesting careers out there that they have not yet even considered.”

Kenney says the students look forward to the event and are often surprised by how much interest they have in careers they had not thought about before.
