Newcomer Elijah Block leads the Greene County High School boys’ golf team through the first week of the season. Coach Dave Destival’s Rams host Ballard (Huxley) on April 12 at Jefferson Community Golf Course. Through the first two nine-hole playing dates, Block is the only Ram to post a score below 50 and he’s done it twice; shooting 43 vs. Carroll in Jefferson on April 4, then battling cold, wind, and sometimes rain, to shoot 42 at Perry on April 7.
Block has played a lot of rounds of golf, but this is his first year on the high school golf team. He told Raccoon Valley Radio there is a difference between teeing it up with his friends and playing high school golf against other teams. “Different pressure for sure. There’s a lot more pressure on the first tee than if I’m going and playing with friends.” He described his golf game. “I can it pretty far, but I’m not 300 yards off the tee or anything. I rely on the putter a lot, more than my driving, although my driving is better than my putting. Putting is definitely what gets the scores done.”
He tied for third individually vs. Carroll and was fourth as an individual in the Perry meet, which had three teams.
