An overflow crowd of Perry supporters gathered inside the Brady Library at Perry High School for a unique opportunity to show support to 5 Perry seniors who will play football next year at Ellsworth Community College in Ellsworth, Iowa. Eli Saemisch, Taviar Lucas, Marcus Meri, Joe Olvera and Solomon Pierce were recognized for their commitment to continue to their football careers at the next level.
“We are definitely very proud of them,” smiled Perry Head football coach Jason Olejniczak. “It is really neat to see 5 teammates stay together and have the opportunity to play at the next level. It does say that our program is putting out players who love football and want to continue to play at the next level along with the ability to play at the college level. I was sitting here with mixed emotions and chuckling whether we should have won a few more games.”
It was an emotional time for a few family members as the athletes talked about their friendship and what the future holds for the five Bluejays.
“I am excited because I get a chance to play with guys that I am familiar with,” said lineman Joe Olvera. “They will support me and I will support them but more importantly I get to play with them a little longer.”
Perry’s leading wide receiver this past fall Taviar Lucas agreed. “Yeah, I feel the same way Joe does. I get to hang out and play with guys that I have so much respect for and continue to hit goals together.”
Solomon Pierce was introduced to the sport of football his freshman year and is excited for the opportunity.
“Moving up to the next level means a lot to me. Playing at Dewey Field will be nothing like competing at the college level and playing at some of the places we will be traveling. I know I am going to get beat up the first day of practice but I am ready for it and ready to hit guys.”
And hitting guys might even involve smacking around former high school teammates.
“I love Eli but I will be ready to smack him in practice since he is offense and I am defense,” laughed Pierce.
The Raccoon Valley Radio Network will have more on these five individuals over the next 2 weeks.
