Winterset hosts a Class 3A track & field State Qualifying Meet today. Greene County, Perry, ADM, Carlisle, Chariton, Dallas Center-Grimes, Saydel (Des Moines), and the host school are involved. The first and second place finishers in each event in 3A automatically qualify for the Coed State Meet at Drake Stadium in Des Moines May 19-20-21. Those placing third or lower still have a chance to qualify, but their performances need to be in the top eight statewide of those that were not first or second.

Perry has three boys’ events ranked second entering today’s meet. Reece Dunlap goes in at second in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes, and Adan Medina sits in second in the 400 meter dash. The Blue Jays rank third in the 4 x 800.

The Perry girls have no events ranked first or second, but Taylor Lathrum is third in the shot put by just 1/4″, and the 4 x 800 meter relay also is third.

Greene County has three boys’ events leading going into action today. Matthew Gordon sits first in the shot put, Max Neese is first in the 200 meter dash, and Daric Whipple leads the 400 meter low hurdles. The Greene County boys sit second in the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 meter relays.

Megan Durbin is the Drake Relays girls’ high jump champion and she is the favorite in that event today. The Rams also have Kenna Marquardt ranked second in the discus throw, and the sprint medley relay enters in second place.

The Paton-Churdan teams go to Manson for the 1A State Qualifying Meet. Freshman Megan Carey leads that field in the long jump.

Automatic State qualifiers will be named on Friday morning’s 7:30 a.m. Sports News on Raccoon Valley Radio, and will be listed online on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com. The at-large qualifiers will be determined sometime Friday by the Iowa High School Girls Athletic Union and the Iowa High School Athletic Association.
