In an effort to keep some of the delinquent court costs in Greene County, the Board of Supervisors are wanting to join in a localized collection program.
Currently, Greene County doesn’t have a collection program for those who can’t pay their fines and court costs after a 30-day period. Once that happens, the costs are then immediately dispersed to a third-party collection agency, where they charge extra fees and the county doesn’t retain any of that money.
Boone County Attorney Dan Kolacia presented to the Supervisors at their meeting earlier this week, the idea of creating a 28E agreement with Boone, Greene and Sac counties to be a part of their program. Details of the agreement would include the counties receiving 28-percent of the court costs collected up to $100,000. Once the threshold is met, then each county would receive an additional 12 percent. By joining together, the threshold could be met quicker and for Greene County, some of the money would stay in the county.
Plus, people could retain their driver’s license and the county’s wouldn’t charge an extra fee.
The proposal will be made to the Sac County Board of Supervisors. Pending a finalized version of the agreement, the Greene County Supervisors have indicated that they will approve the agreement at a future meeting.
