The Perry Jayette softball team started the new season on a positive note as the Jayettes blanked Des Moines Christian 12-0 in five innings.  Perry scored 4 runs in the first inning, followed by 3 more in the second and put the game away early with 5 in the 5th.  Rachel Kinney led the way going 4-4 with 5 rbi’s including a double and home run.  Sophomore Sydney Vancil smashed a two out gram slam to put the game away.

“I just told myself before I stepped in the box that it was my job to get everybody in.  I kept telling myself that the entire at bat.  I had two strikes and I was able to foul a tough pitch off and then I got a pitch that I could hit.  At first, I didn’t think it would go that far as it didn’t feel real solid, but it just kept going and that was fun to watch,” smiled Vancil.

Maddie West, Emma Olejniczak, Victoria Hegstrom and Johanna Diw all finished with 2 hits.  Alyssa Kruger added 2 rbi’s.  Lost in the offensive surge was the solid pitching from Olejniczak.  The junior tossed a no hitter allowing just one base runner in working the complete 5 inning game.  She finished with 6 strikeouts.

“It was a great first night,” added Head Coach Tina Kenney.  “The team played in the moment and one pitch at a time.  We swung the bats well and kept pressure on the entire game.  Our defense was spotless.”

Perry is 1-0 and will host North Polk tonight in a 7:30 game at the Perry Athletic Complex.  You can listen to the game on KDLS and raccoonvalleyradio.com.
