The Greene County teams swept Heart of Iowa Activities Conference baseball and softball games in Nevada on Wednesday night. The Rams won the baseball game 5-4 after trailing 4-3, and the softball team led all the way en route to an 8-1 victory.
Coach Tom Kennedy’s softball Rams improved to 5-2 overall and 2-2 in the conference. Pitcher and number three hitter Hannah Promes was home ill, but Samantha Hardaway tossed a three-hitter and the Greene County batters wrapped out 11 hits. Hardaway struck out four batters and walked three. The Nevada run was earned. Offensively, Carleigh Paup had two doubles, a single, and one run batted in. Jenna Beyers had a double and two singles and a run batted in. Megan Carey singled twice and had one RBI, and Megan Durbin doubled, singled, and knocked in a run. Coach Mark Sawhill’s baseball Rams improved to 1-2 overall and in the HOIAC in their first road game of the season. Branden Miller was the winner in relief of starter Tyler Beger. The winning run scored with one out in the top of the seventh and runners on the corners. Reid Lamoureux scored on a ground ball to third when the throw to the plate was just late. The Cubs loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but a strikkeout and soft liner behind second caught by shortstop Lamoureux ended the rally. The Rams had eight hits including the first extra base hits this season, doubles by Lamoureux and Miller. Miller and Thomas Gannon singled twice, and Wade Adcock and Mac Adamson also singled. Miller drove in two runs with one RBI from Lamoureux and Ben Wilkins.
