Heart of Iowa Habitat for Humanity has selected two project houses this summer for their Helping Hands program.

Associate Director Jeff Lamoureux says their first home is at 903 8th Street in Scranton. It is for Travis Edwards and his family. Repairs include replacing the roof and painting the exterior of the home. Volunteers will start working tomorrow and the project is expected to be completed by the end of June. The second house is located at 607 West State Street in Jefferson. The homeowner is Lisa Aldridge and repairs include replacing the roof. Work begins next month with the goal to complete the repairs by the end of July.

Helping Hands is a program where volunteers help make repairs to the exteriors of existing homes. Lamoureux points out that majority of the time, their group is needed to replace roofs of homes.

“Again for a homeowner, when it comes time for that roof to be repaired, they kind of look at their budget and the cash isn’t always there to take care of that or the manpower. You can call a contractor and there’s a lot of great contractors in our area that can do it, but of course they want to be paid for that. With Habitat for Humanity, we can come in and provide that volunteer labor that help them complete that project or complete that project for them.”

A third house is currently being considered in Rippey for August. Lamoureux says more information may be provided, if the project is approved.

Volunteer work is primarily done on Saturdays through several church congregations, but if someone wants to help them with their projects, contact Lamoureux to sign up. Call his office at 386-3093 or email him at ad@heartofiowahabitat.org.
