It will be a busy weekend in Jefferson.
Not only is it Bell Tower Festival weekend, but two different bicycling groups will be traveling from Des Moines to Jefferson on the Raccoon River Valley Trail.
The eighth annual “Tour the Raccoon” takes cyclists from Des Moines on the bike trail on Saturday and stay overnight at the trailhead campground in Jefferson and head back to Des Moines on Sunday. The ride is coordinated by the Des Moines Cycle Club and President Georgie Libbie believes their numbers will be down this year due to late scheduling after new regulations were issued by the three conservation boards for having events on the bike trail.
RAGBRAI’s Dream Team consists of about 40 teens and 15 adult mentors that will also ride from Des Moines to Jefferson on the bike trail, stay overnight at Greene County High School on Saturday and ride back to Des Moines on Sunday. The teens are usually recommended by counselors, pastors and at-risk youth program workers to learn about and participate in the RAGBRAI experience. They undergo a five-month training program and if they make it through RAGBRAI, the teens get to keep the $1,000 in bicycle gear that they were given at the beginning of the program in March.
A free complimentary breakfast will be served to both groups at the Jefferson Depot, sponsored by McFarland Clinic of Jefferson.
