The Greene County High School softball team will pass the halfway mark of the 2016 season this week and head coach Tom Kennedy has seen his team go 7-6 overall and 4-4 in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference play entering this week. With just two starters back from the team that was third in the State Tournaments of 2014 and ’15, the coach has a largely inexperienced team that is learning as they go.

Junior Hannah Promes and sophomore Samantha Hardaway are the top pitchers. The duo has done well overall, and the coach said playing good defense behind them is a big key to how the second half of the season goes. “They’re both getting better, but we’ve got to relay on good defense behind them. We can’t give up a lot of extra outs because they don’t have the blazing fastball or the strikeout pitch that can get people out, so if we give up extra outs, they’ll have a tendency to get hit after while, but if can limit the outs, they’ll keep us in the game and give us a chance to win.”

Greene County plays tonight in Monroe vs. PCM for softball in vs. PCM in Prairie City for baseball.
