It was a hot weekend and while the temperatures have decreased a bit we’re bound to see temperatures back in the 90s again soon.

However, when it feels hot outside it’s even worse in small, enclosed spaces like a car so Kurt Kottenberg with the National Weather Service reminds us to never leave children or pets in the car unattended.

“It can get really hot in a car really quickly.  Temperatures can reach 99 degrees if the temperature is 80 (degrees) within 10 minutes. So it can be a lot warmer for your pets and children if in the vehicle.  Most heat related deaths are preventable basically, if you’re prepared for it in advance your chances of being adversely impacted by the heat go down very rapidly.”

Last year 24 children died from heat strokes after being left in a vehicle.  No matter how long you will be away from the car, it’s never safe to leave pets or kids inside alone, especially when experiencing extreme temperatures.
