Heavy rain stopped the ADM and Greene County high school softball game in Jefferson on Tuesday night in the bottom of the third inning. The Rams had just taken a 1-0 lead on a single by Samantha Hardaway to begin the frame. Carleigh Paup hit a two-out soft single to center field to drive in Hardaway for the lead and Paup advanced to third on a throwing error. Two pitches later, lightning was spotted to the west and a short time after that, very heavy rain with strong winds occurred. After waiting 16 minutes, the umpires called the game, and it will not be made up. More heavy rain fell after the teams left the City Diamond on East Lincolnway. Five innings are needed for a complete game, or 4-1/2 if the home team is ahead, but less than three full innings were completed.
ADM is rated number one in Class 4A and is 16-2 while the Rams are 7-7. All-State senior pitcher Molly Jacobsen struck out five Rams in 2-1/3 innings. She gave up two hits and did not walk anyone. Ram pitcher Hannah Promes allowed no runs on two hits in three innings. She had no walks and one strikeouts, and benefited from some great defense.
Next up for Tom Kennedy’s team is a trip to Collins on Friday vs. Heart of Iowa Activities Conference opponent CMB.
