Diamondhead LakeA unique water skiing program is coming to Diamondhead Lake Monday.

The adaptive water ski program, hosted by Wendy and James Shoemaker, stems from their desire to allow their daughter, Suzanne, who has cerebral palsy, to try the sport out, says James. “We try to give her the opportunity to try everything. Since we live on a lake, we’ve always wanted to allow her to try water skiing. We actually found a group up in Waterloo that does it, so we went almost three hours up there and she loved water skiing, so we bought her own ski.”

He adds his daughter enjoys the sport on a modified ski. “Her ski is one that you sit down on. It’s got a seat that looks like a cage built out of tubing that you sit on top of with your knees on high, and it’s on a sort of oversized wakeboard.”

The Shoemakers will tell us more about the program Monday on Let’s Talk Guthrie County. It airs during the 9 a.m., noon and 5 p.m. hours on K107.9 and www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.
