One of the biggest wins of the high school softball season for the Greene County Rams took place on Wednesday night in Des Moines. Coach Tom Kennedy’s team came from behind to knock Saydel out of a first place tie in the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference by a score of 9-8. The Rams improve to 15-13 overall and 7-8 in the league while the Eagles fell to 20-10 and 12-3. CMB (Maxwell) is 13-2 in the conference and Saydel and CMB meet tonight in Des Moines to end the HOIAC season. Greene County ends its regular season tonight in Roland vs. Roland-Story on KG98 and www.raccoonvalleyradio.com
Greene County trailed 5-2 after four innings and 8-4 after five. A four run sixth tied the game at 8-8, and a run in the top of the seventh stood up for the one run victory. Freshman Jenna Beyers was the winning pitcher in relief of starter Hannah Promes. Beyers went the final 2-2/3 innings and allowed no runs on two hits, no walks, and she struck two batters out. Promes allowed eight runs, four earned, on six hits and one walk. She also fanned two batters.
Megan Durbin hit her third homer of the season, and third this week, for Greene County. She finished with two hits and two runs batted in. Izzy Bravard was three for three with two singles and a double, and she drove in a run. Carleigh Paup had two singles and two RBI, and Promes singled and drove two runs in. Sydney Koch did not have a hit, but had two RBI, and Megan Carey and Beyers contributed base hits.
There were some errors in the game with four charged to Greene County and five to Saydel.
The win last night guarantees the Rams no worse than a .500 record this season and a win in Roland tonight would clinch a winning season. R-S is 10-16 on the season, but has played most opponents close, including a 2-1 loss last night to CMB. The Rams won the first meeting with the Norsemen by a 4-1 final. Air time tonight is set for 7:10 p.m. with first pitch around 7:30 p.m.
