The second rooftop art project in downtown Jefferson is complete.
Nicole Friess-Schilling owns Prairie Blue Creative Arts Center on the west side of the square and she painted “The Spirit of a Woman” on top of her flat black roof.
“It’s a portrait of her eyes closed and her hair flowing out behind her with blue accents in the hair and then her red lips popping out and her eyes are closed. That’s pretty much it, it’s pretty simple.”
She explains why she chose the particular painting that she did.
“Well the type of art with the line drawings and portraits it’s kind of, I guess, my style and it’s what I enjoy painting and drawing. I thought it would look good on top of the roof, it’s just simple, it’s pretty direct (and) it’s easy to see from the observation deck (of the Mahanay Bell Tower).”
It follows the first rooftop art project on top of Skeeter Creek Fabricators on the north side of the square about one year later. The project is in conjunction with Jefferson Matters: Main Street’s Tower View Team idea.
Schilling is hopeful that more downtown buildings put rooftop up so there’s even more for people to look at when they visit the top of the Mahanay Bell Tower.
