The Greene County High School baseball team had a turnaround midway through the 2016 season to finish with 11 wins and 17 losses. Coach Mark Sawhill’s team was at 3-12 before winning eight of the next 11 games. They finished the season with losses to third ranked Saydel (Des Moines) and number eight Boone, both on the road, to finish six games below the .500 mark.
A team batting average of .297 and contributions from players in the lower half of the lineup were contributing factors in the turnaround, according to the head coach. “I think we did okay. There were times I wished we would have hit a little bit better. At the beginning of the season our top four guys hit real well and kind of carried the team. About halfway through the season, the bottom half (of the order) started coming alive a little bit, and our top half fell off a little bit. If we’d just have put everybody together I think we could have brought the average up even a little higher. All in all, some kids improved, and that was a big thing for us, to have kids get better as the season went on. The lower part of the lineup improving those batting averages as we went along was an indication of that.”
